Why this must be read:
For such a short piece (530 words), this story packs a very heavy punch. There’s so much going on that it’s hard to pick one part that I liked the most. Em Dash explores Daniel’s thoughts at the moment of Janet’s death in Heroes Part 2 and the immediate aftermath. He comes to the realization too late that he loved her. Em’s word usage and turn of phrase is just something else. An example of my favorite paragraph below just explores this beautifully, just so sad and yet sweet.
This story’s flow makes it stand out as well. The first few paragraphs have a surreal and floaty quality, like Daniel hasn’t quite yet come to realization that Janet’s forever gone. Then the blasting back into reality.... and the "weightless" quality of Janet at the very end.... *sniffle* Em Dash does wonders with her narrative that places the reader square into Daniel's thoughts and situation. So read and cry, my friends!
Story Summary: Janet's eyes don't flutter when my fingers pass over her eyelashes.
I lean over and kiss her rose bitten lips, taste the drying saliva. As I pull away, I lick my lips, trying to remember the gritty texture of the dirt in my mouth, the weight of my realization. I squeeze her still warm cheek, still warm but not moving.
