Why This Must Be Read: I love how this fic doesn't shy away from the "elephant in the room". Rodney brings Lorne home for the holidays because Jeannie told him "to bring the person responsible for making [him] a human being". Awkwardness ensues when Jeannie wonders why Rodney brings Lorne instead of John.
In Lorne's POV you get to see how it sometimes hurts that everyone thinks Rodney and John are together, but at the same time the fact that Rodney doesn't even realize that Jeannie is talking about someone other than Lorne makes up for it all. Sweet and a little schmoopy, while at the same time dealing with some of the angst that Lorne must feel about John and Rodney must feel about having to keep it all a secret.
Excerpt:
Jeannie looks confused and opens her mouth a few times before closing it shut, mouth a slanted unhappy line like Rodney’s sometimes gets and Lorne smiles.
“Hi.” He says.
“Hi.” She says back to him numbly.
“So this is… kind of awkward.”
“Why would you think I was involved with John?” Rodney asks.
“Oh I don’t know, the way you two acted with one another. I mean he… he put up with you and you’d go into each others quarters and laugh and make jokes and he showed me that tape. I mean I just didn’t think all of that meant friend.”
“He is a friend. A very good friend. One of my very best and I am not doing anything with him.”
“Anymore.” Lorne mutters.
He watches Jeannie’s eyes widen and Rodney frowns at him.
“Ever.” Rodney says.
“Sure.”
