Why This Must Be Read: Jonas wants to prove to Jack that he's learned his bitter lesson after what happened to Daniel. And what better way to prove it than be re-enacting the scenario on P7J-989...?
And yes, things with the Gamekeeper go about as well as they usually do.
Jack learns a lot about Jonas, Jonas learns a lot about himself, Daniel defies expectations (as expected), and the story is a thoughtful, satisfying read.
"I can understand," she began, looking at her hands stirring the spoon round and round and round in the cup, "why you think you need to show you're committed to SG-1, Jonas, but I don't think this is the way to do it. Have you thought about what you're asking from Colonel O'Neill's point of view?"
"I've read the mission reports from both P7J-989 and P2S-4C3," Jonas answered earnestly.
"That's not exactly what I meant. Reports won't tell you everything. For instance, you're asking the Colonel to confront some very painful memories: a world where he's had to 'play' losing his unit repeatedly added to a situation in which he lost his best friend. Not to mention you want to undermine the nobility of what Daniel did by changing history. It's a lot to ask."
"I do see that, Major Carter. I'm not asking this lightly. But Colonel O'Neill doesn't trust me, won't explain anything - won't even let me leave the base unsupervised. I know I deserve all that for my actions on Kelowna, but it won't work now I'm a member of SG-1."
"Well, maybe you need to give him time, Jonas," she replied placatingly. "Maybe he just doesn't know you well enough yet."
Jonas wasn't convinced. "But he's making no attempt to get to know me better! He told me he doesn't blame me for Dr Jackson's death, yet the fact that I am partly responsible is undeniable." He stabbed disconsolately at his food. "I just don’t think we should keep avoiding the issue."
"Going back to Kelowna won't help."
"Except for Colonel O'Neill seeing I'd give anything for events not to have happened the way they did."
