Why This Must Be Read: In Sanctus Espiritus, a SGA/Eureka AU non-canon crossover by Rhi aka vibersweb, John Sheppard turns out to be the child of two Global Dynamics scientists and comes home to Eureka to try to start a new life after the events of "The Return." He develops a great and deep platonic friendship with Jack Carter. I love how they each find a true kindred soul in a fellow regular guy with common sense who's much smarter than he lets on. They both understand the joys and frustrations of working with a bunch of crazy geniuses and the daily challenge of keeping them from ending the world or killing themselves on a regular basis. There's a lovely melancholy tone to the piece and John's longing for Atlantis and homesickness is palpable through out. Miko and Zelenka, who go to work at Global Dynamics during the exile on Earth make fun cameos.
This story is probably one of my favorite SGA crossovers because the Eureka characters and setting are done well, in character, and add to my enjoyment and understanding of the SGA characters. The story is by turns funny and sad and nothing much happens but that's part of the charm. The sequel, Weapons of Mass Distortion, picks up shortly after John's return to Atlantis as the two men continue their friendship long-distance, creating much gossip and amused speculation in Eureka as to the exact nature of their relationship. It's perfectly in tone with the first story and just as much fun. I can only hope for more of this series soon.
P.S. A lovely background snippet, Going Home, can be read here: http://vipersweb.livejournal.com/23104.html
