Why This Must Be Read:
This is a breathtakingly intelligent and moving treatment of AMTDI. The scenario the author sets up is practically designed to lead to what, in a lesser writer, would be caveman!alpha!Jack and damsel!Daniel, but here it is reworked into something much more interesting: Jack is allowed his intellect and control, and Daniel his strength. There’s nothing routine or redeeming about the circumstances, the violence is conveyed without fetishising it, and there’s convincing worldbuilding, covering an extended timeframe, without any over-explaining, which is just what the story needs to put you inside their heads as they get through each day. And the epilogue – oh, my, the epilogue is my very favourite bit, and it slays me every time I read it. I get such a strong visual sense of Jack, here, as well as his sense of responsibility and control, his past connections and his current life. (And good goddamn, I just read it again, to see what else I wanted to add to this rec, and I’m sitting here at stupid o’clock in the morning with tears in my eyes.)
Excerpt, Debriefing Transcript: Col. O'Neill

O'Neill: I don't [pauses] Call me Jack, sir. I don't [pauses] I don't think the Colonel is ever coming back.
Q: [pauses] All right, Jack.
