Why This Must Be Read: After that impressive demonstration of John's flying skills in "Enemy at the Gate," flying that 302, it feels like the perfect time to recommend this story in which Cameron Mitchell meets the infamous John Sheppard, is disappointed and then over many encounters and flying in a 302 battle with him, finally gets what all the hype about. The Cam POV feels dead-on and it's very enjoyable to see a comparison of two characters who are so alike and yet so different, one the Air Force golden boy and the other a self-destructive rebel. By the time Cam becomes a full-on fanboy (as he does so well), the reader knows the mysterious Sheppard better too. Cottontail has a strong grasp on Sheppard's characterization and writes flying better than pretty much anyone else I've read. Check out the rest of her gen fic for many more treasures (never read her McShep stories, sorry).
A snippet of the fic....
The first time Cameron meets John Sheppard the guy doesn’t make a great impression. In fact, Cam’s a bit disappointed. The infamous Black Hawk pilot, with the strongest string of ATA gene found in an Earth human thus far. A man gifted with a command post in the great Ancient City of Atlantis. The city Daniel would give an arm and a leg just to spend a week in. A command post in another galaxy no less!
This is a man General O’Neill always seems to take special interest in whenever talk of removing him from said post on Atlantis is whispered amongst the rest of the SGC brass. Cameron knows General O’Neill doesn’t pick men for such high posts without extremely good credentials and proof of solid strength and self sacrifice.
So of course Cameron read Sheppard’s file. But all he gets out of it is that John Sheppard has massive authority figure issues; the file is littered with counseling and harsh recommendations by superior officers. Phrases like, “Not officer material” and “Brilliant pilot but lacking the distinction of a motivated officer” or “Never put this guy under my command again” are spread throughout the pages.
Finally sitting there across the table from him in Atlantis is John Sheppard in the flesh. And the truth is Cam can’t see anything to discount what he’s read in those files. So what the hell is it, outside of that ATA gene, that earns him the defense and recommendation of General O’Neill himself?
He’s slouched in his chair between Vala and Sam and seems only half interested in the proceedings. He’s good at wrangling Dr. McKay when others are ready to throttle him, but other than that? Nothing really pops out to signal “Great Man!”
Though obviously he does run a tight ship. The Marines are in order, the civilians in check, everyone working together in apparent unity. But he seems separate from it all, above and detached from the surrounding flurry of activity as he leans against a railing and accepts a clipboard from a passing scientist, eyes passing over it, signing it with a quick pen.
Cameron doesn’t know exactly how he thought Sheppard would be, maybe more wily and a bit egotistical, but it just isn’t the case. So Cam leaves Atlantis slightly disillusioned with regard to the infamous Lt. Col. John Sheppard.
