Why This Must Be Read: This is more an Elizabeth-centric piece with hints of her and John being more than friends than an outright romantic story. The focus is on the ordeal of people having gone missing and Elizabeth's struggle to not give up hope and not snap under the strain, and how John fits into that process. There are a lot of great little touches in the story about the other characters as well like Rodney, Ronon and Teyla, all of them very authentic. Daniel and Teal'c make a cameo appearance.
She knows that it may be time to start preparing some type of speech. The team has been missing for twelve days and there are no more leads. They’ve resorted to searching the same planets over again hoping for new results, and Rodney snidely remarks that it’s the definition of insanity before he walks away and doesn’t show himself again for the rest of the day. Even John can’t keep the mask on for her.
He comes to her quarters that night, worn down and sullen, but he manages to smile slightly as he hands her the book.
She looks up from the speech she would never in a million years call a eulogy, but that’s what it is. “What is this?”
“Doctor Jackson originally brought it to give to you, but he said I should do it instead.”
“Clever bastard,” she mutters, accepting the book. It’s an updated translation of the Book of Origin, something she’s been meaning to read through all year. It’s ironic how appropriate the material is for the current situation.
