Why This Must Be Read: I am very fond of this little ficlet, because the intriguing outside perspective of our beloved team made me curious enough to read Howl's Moving Castle, which led me to the Chrestomanci novels and the other Diana Wynne Jones novels and...

Ahem.

Very short, very sweet, and entirely worth it just for Sophie's automatic assumption regarding Teal'c and his staff weapon!

Why This Must Be Read: If the Ancient gene was such a valuable commodity in Atlantis that they wrote a completely ignorant and inexperienced John into the mission based on the strength of his, why would they ignore a young, vastly experienced guy who already knew about everything and had the gene as well?

In this two-part series, they didn't... and clone!Jack ends up as part of the Atlantis expedition.

These two stories don't actually get us to Atlantis, but it's an intriguing, well-written premise. And who knows? Maybe some feedback will prompt the author to write more! :)

“Damn it, man, I’m a doctor, not a miracle-worker!” House spit out, leaning over his desk with an air of furious intent.

Written in the Stars, by Gray Cardinal (G)

Categories: gen, epistolary, friendship
Warnings: none
Author's Journal: [personal profile] graycardinal
Author's Website: [archiveofourown.org profile] gray_cardinal
Link: Written in the Stars

Why This Must Be Read: I'm not sure I even know a female version of John Watson existed (hey, medical doctor, name of show... it's a pretty safe assumption), but no knowledge of Elementary is required to enjoy this epistolary exchange between Janet, Joan, Cassie and George. There are multiple time jumps to cover nearly a decade of canon, but it's a delightful exploration of the friendships that surely exist outside the SGC.

I assume that if you are familiar with Joan Watson, you'll enjoy this ever more than I did... but either way, it's definitely a keeper!

I would be delighted to be Cassie’s weird but absurdly trustworthy Aunt Joan, keeper of secrets, buyer of lunches, sender of mildly inappropriate Christmas gifts, purveyor of worldly wisdom, et cetera. I hereby swear that I am neither a Bond villain nor a Bond girl, and that the worst thing your bosses are likely to find in my personal history is the business with the cadaver, the trombone, and the three watermelons, which I assume is already in their files from your background check.

Sorry, broken link. Fixed now!

Why This Must Be Read: Jack and Vala go shopping for Atlantis. Things escalate from there.

Yes, there are some serious notes here and there, but this is mostly an unashamed romp of SGA and SGC personnel being delightfully themselves with bonus Sam-in-command. Guaranteed to leave you grinning!

Why This Must Be Read: This is Cassie and mini!Jack, working at a diner, and meeting various crossover characters. That's it, really. And yet there is something about this fic that delights me: Cassie and mini!Jack wholly out of the loop, as they should be. Jack knows who Cassie is, but can't say anything, and has no knowledge of events like Janet's death that take place after he leaves the SGC; Cassie herself has no idea that "Jon" might be someone else, as his existence isn't something that would qualify for "need to know."

I personally recognized one crossover but not the other, and it didn't matter in the slightest. It's just fun to see them interacting with one another, when we know so much more than they do and we can understand so much that they can't!

Is this the future I envision for these two? Probably not. But they're both happy, and I don't see what else we could want for Cassie and mini!Jack.

Casualty Notification, by KelinciHutan (PG)

Why This Must Be Read: I disliked Unending for many, many reasons. This wonderful story is an excellent episode fix for one of the most egregious flaws: the blink-and-you-miss-it reaction to the loss of an entire race.

When news of the Asgard's fate reaches Atlantis, Caldwell reaches out to Hermiod. What follows is a tribute to the Asgard, a nod to Cimmeria, the meaning of friendship and camaraderie, and a much more satisfying sendoff than anything in the show.

Thor and the Asgard deserved better, and this lovely fic gives it to them!

Why This Must Be Read: This is a shameless excuse to have Teal'c and Spock raise eyebrows at one another and have multiple exchanges of Fascinating and Indeed, but it is also a delightfully in-character crackfic told from AOS Jim Kirk's POV of the entire classic team interacting with the newer version of Star Trek's Enterprise crew. Guaranteed to leave you grinning!

Author's Summary:

"Where'd everything go?" John asked, looking around the mostly empty room. "Not like you to put stuff in storage."

Why This Must Be Read:

The fun part of rec'ing fic is that occasionally I get to rec one of my own! (Lures in new folk to do recs...)

It's part of a larger fic that still sits in my WIP folder, but it stands alone well. It's Jack O'Neill telling John to get his head out of his butt. Pining/oblivious boyz take over from there.

I figure a bit of fluff and romance is something we can all use. Enjoy!

Author's Summary:

Fulfilling the terms of his mother's Will brings Xander to the father he never knew about.

Why This Must Be Read:

I know there have been other variations of this kind of story; Jack being related to any part of the Buffy Scooby gang is a thing I've seen on and off over time. Not sure I've seen Jack as Xander's dad, but here you go!

I like Faith here, she's fully supportive of Xander when he's putting himself down.

Jack just kinda rolls with his new found kid, which is very Jack-like. But the "so, what do you do?" discussion at the end is cute.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a gripping and clever fusion with Pacific Rim, with Rodney as a frustrated Jaeger designer and John as an almost washed-up ex-Jaeger pilot, wounded when his connection to Holland was abruptly severed. As the summary says, "He’s not eager to go back, but the right Drift partner might just convince him." But wait, there's more! Orders, Gathering the Troops, Calvary by Ladyholder (PG)

Link to Fic: Read in this order is my suggestion; Gathering the Troops and Calvary are intertwined, so you can read those however you like.
--Orders
--Gathering the Troops
--Calvary

Author's Summary:

Based on the one sentence prompt: “John Sheppard is contemplating retiring and going back to Earth, but McKay has quite a bit to say about that stupid idea.”

Why This Must Be Read:

Part one, Orders, is pure John/Rodney and on Atlantis. Jack doesn't show up until Gathering the Troops, but he jumps in with both feet, kicking ass and taking names.

Tony Dinozzo is only a bit player in these stories, and he's really in only Gathering the Troops.

It's fun, with all of our (well, at least my) favorite characters being BAMF.

Word Count:  21,000
Author on DW: [personal profile] keiramarcos
Author's Website: Keira's World
Link: Patient Zero

Author's Summary:

Earth makes contact with Atlantis months after an out-of-control medical experiment destroyed their humanity. They get a little more than they bargained for when they meet the Tatsu.

Why This Must Be Read:

This story was originally written for a Rough Trade challenge. The fact that it's on the Wild Hare site and not her personal site means that Keira hasn't edited it and there's a note that it may never be edited. So there's a 'what you see is what you get' warning to be aware of. But if you don't subscribe to Wild Hare, you may miss seeing this story again. (And if you're one of the three people in fandom that have never read Keira's work, she doesn't tolerate concrit or begging for more. So don't.)

Another Atlantis-focused fic, but Jack O'Neill has a major part in this story.

It's a story of xenophobia, greed, and the IOA being total asshats (as Keira would say!).

After an IOA-sanctioned experiment by Carson Beckett on John Sheppard, but without John's knowledge or permission, a mutated virus got loose on Atlantis. It changes all those that survive to something other than human.

It's an interesting story about what makes us human, and how greed for powerful weapons and super-soldiers can skew one's morals.

Jack represents the US in this morality play, and -- even among his team mates -- is the only one who truly understands that 'people' are 'people'.

The Asgard are also major players in this story and we don't find out why until the end (which I'm not going to spoil!).

And interesting story with all of the major Stargate players.

Word Count:  221,668
Author on DW: not found

Author's Summary: (from the first story of the series)

Gibbs has two files in his head marked "DiNozzo" and "Trouble." Most problems involving his SFA end up in the file labeled "DiNozzo— Hilarious Trouble." This problem, however, is looking like it's going to end up in the other file, the one labeled "DiNozzo— Serious Trouble."

When a phone call from Philadelphia causes Tony to begin acting oddly, Gibbs suspects that something is wrong. His suspicions are confirmed when a Sentinel and Guide pair from the Philadelphia S & G Center show up at NCIS asking for Guide DiNozzo. Uncertain what his SFA has gotten himself into, Gibbs calls in the big guns: the former Judge Advocate General and the current Alpha Sentinel of D.C., A.J. Chegwidden, and his guide, Captain Harmon Rabb.

Why This Must Be Read:

A Jack/Tony fic, with a huge cast of characters.

An interesting take on Sentinels and Guide where there's no immediate imperative to bond and Sentinels can manage very well with temp Guides, thank you very much.

This is a series of 4 stories and while the AO3 page says it's not complete, it ends nicely and you're not left hanging.

Jack O'Neill doesn't show up until the 2nd story, the first serves as backstory to Tony's story. You can skip the first story, if you're only here for Jack O'Neill, but it's a good story and lays some of the background for who Tony is at the time he and Jack meet.

Of course, Tony gets dragged into the SGC, and he and Jack work to save the world, and their relationship, through all the crazy things that happen around them.

The stories are well written and fun.

Author's Summary:

When Tony goes to the bar one lonely Christmas Eve Night, he did so to avoid his empty apartment. A week later, he went back for the same reason. There, a handsome stranger tucked away in the corner draws his attention, and the attraction between the two is undeniable. As new possibilities arise, Tony will be faced with some difficult decisions.

Jack has just been transferred to DC permanently, and he’s not too thrilled with his new situation he’s found himself in. When he catches the handsome younger man eyeing him at the bar, he finds something that might make his new local a bit less tedious. And, well, he’d never been good at denying himself something he wanted. If the brass wants him in DC, they’ll get him in DC.

Why This Must Be Read:

I seem to be on a Jack O'Neill/Tony Dinozzo kick. I have one more to offer later in the month!

While this fic is firmly Tony Dinozzo centered and set in the NCIS universe, Jack O'Neill is a major character in this fun fic. It's the story of two lonely men coming together to find love in unexpected places.

There's some predictability in the plot, where the forces that swirl around Jack help Tony decide to leave NCIS (that's a spoiler, but not unexpected) and move into a position perfect for Tony. But there's hot (non-graphic) sex, and food, and a puppy! So it's a treat!

Why This Must Be Read:

Jack and Rodney together on Atlantis! It's a less often seen combination and Tarlan hits this one out of the park.

This is a series of fic, but the majority of the story is in the initial fic, One Way Ticket. There are five ficlets that go with the base fic, mostly after the initial fic. But they make a good follow up to the basic story.

It's mostly from Jack's POV, and he spends a good part of the fic angsting over his attraction to Rodney. But Rodney gets his own in, pining over Jack.

It's on a mission gone awry where Jack gets hurt that our boys get together, but it's not easy.

But after some steamy sex, Jack needs to go back to Earth. He's on vacation after all! But, being his brilliant self, Rodney comes up with a solution that makes everyone happy!
