A Different Beginning by HathorGirl (PG)

Characters: SG-1, Jolinar, Jacob, Hammond, Maybourne
Categories: Gen, drama, AU, Angst

Why This Must Be Read: I was very happy to see that this fic is now complete, so I can rec it here :) I have been following it regularly as it has been posted. It is a really different take on "In the Line of Duty", with Jolinar initially taking Jack O'Neill as host, and surviving. There are many great and fun exchanges between O'Neill and Jolinar, and also a lot of wonderful scenes with SG-1 being there for one another.

Note: The story is the first part in a series.

Angle of Incidence by Hatshepsut (G)

Show: SG-1

Warnings: Some violence, minor alt. character death

Why This Must Be Read: Ah, that Quantum Mirror, it's such a useful device. One of my favourites really, because I love seeing what authors come up with as alternate universes. In this story, Hatshepsut takes a slightly different twist and creates an alternate world that is both similar and yet very different from ours, taking the time to think through the history that would've made it that way. What makes this story equally memorable and worth the read is the presence of Evil Criminal Mastermind Daniel Jackson and the good guy lawman determined to take him down, Harry Maybourne. This is an exciting story that does a great job of exploring what Daniel would be like if he used his 'powers' for evil instead of good - but without going to quite the world takeover lengths Absolute Power did.

Five Nights in Nottingham by bluemoonmaverick (T)

Show: SG-1

Rec Category: Sam/Jack
Characters: SG1 (original) team, Harry Maybourne
Pairings: Sam/Jack
Categories: Het, Adventure, Romance, Humor
Warnings: None
Author on LJ: Not on LJ
Author's Website: Author's Profile on Fanfiction.net
Link: Five Nights in Nottingham

Why This Must Be Read: As you might guess from the title, this story is set in a world where the legend of Robin Hood is more than just myth. When SG1 is mistaken for the band of merry men (and woman), hilarity and (mis)adventure ensues. Add in a dash of romance and you end up with a fun and heartwarming romp.

Five Holidays That Jack O'Neill Never Celebrated by Cofax (PG)

Rec Category: Jack O'Neill
Pairing: briefly implied Jack/Harry, Jack/other, but not remotely pairing-focused
Category: AU, Five Things, drama
Warnings: character death, implied slash, het, non-con
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cofax7

Why This Must Be Read:

[livejournal.com profile] cofax7 can work the Five Things format (as is also demonstrated by Five Battles Teal'c Of Chulak Never Fought, which I've recced before).

These five AUs are in turn ironic, chilling, and heart-warming (and I never use the term "heart-warming", but I can't think of a better one here). Each is one sketched in with just enough detail to make you wish for more of the story (I'll admit that I have a particular fondness for the version of the team in "Thanksgiving").

And under all possible circumstances, her Jack is utterly Jack. Even in the one where -- well, he's not entirely himself.

Why This Must Be Read: In this intense story, Maybourne attempts some ugly payback for Daniel’s role in saving the Tollan in Enigma. His purpose is two-fold: to drive a wedge between Daniel and the SGC, and to further his own plans for Dr. Daniel Jackson.

What happens next is the kind of superb characterization we can expect from a Random fic: Daniel’s wrestling with the military attitude, and his distress at what he perceives as his standing and status; Jack’s struggle to understand Daniel outside the context of chain-of-command, and to stop Daniel’s withdrawal from the team and their friendship; Sam, caught between scientist and soldier, and trying to show her commanding officer the way to walk the line between them both; and Teal’c, who is marvelous and manages to cut right to the heart of things every time.

With a marvelous cameo from Hammond (go, George!), some nice foreshadowing of Bane and The Curse, and wonderful teamy goodness to tie everything together, Files is a great look at early season SG-1.

[Disclaimer: I had the pleasure of beta-reading this. I urged Random to get this uploaded ASAP so I could rec it before the end of the month!]

Bonded, by Tallulah Rasa (PG)

Rec Category: Humor

Pairing: none

Warnings: non-sexual semi-nudity, minor innuendo
Author on LJ: unknown
Author's Website: To Explore the Universe and Eat Pie

Why This Must Be Read: Jack and Jacob end up a little too close for comfort. Sam is horrified, Maybourne is busy howling with laughter, Teal’c is having way too much fun to be helpful, and Daniel is sweetly, poisonously vengeful as only Daniel can be.

Written in Tallulah Rasa’s wonderful style, Jack discovers that dismissing his linguist as unnecessary is unwise under any cirucmstances – especially when he needs that linguist to come to his rescue. There’s great characterization, snappy banter, and a final nod towards friendship that is sure to make you smile!
