Comparing Scars by Cofax (G)
I've still got a rec or two to finish on Gen, but I'm neglecting my other category, Samantha Carter. Recs this month for Capt/Maj/Lt. Col/Dr. Carter will be gen related as well, because I'm all about the friendships and independance of our lovely leading lady, if not so much the romances.
Rec Category: Samantha Carter
Pairing: None (gen)
Characters: Sam Carter; Vala Mal Doran
Category: Character Study; Drama; Missing Scene
Warning: none
Author on LJ:
cofax7
Author's Website: http://mouldiwarps.shriftweb.org/
Link to Story: Comparing Scars
Why this should be read:
A short fic, but rich in characterization, it's Sam's first look at Vala as they prep for the mission in "Beachhead".
cofax7 touches on the common back story of these two different characters in a thought provoking way. In fact, I like to think of this missing scene as a piece of canon that somehow got lost in the cutting room floor.
My favorite aspect of this fic is it makes Sam sound very "human", it's a side of Sam we don't often see when she's busy playing with naquadah, saving the world, and/or "blowing up suns".

I have only one tiny quibble with this story: it ends long before I'm ready for to end. But that's because I'm greedy and I really want to have more time getting to know this Sam.

I like the open-endedness of "Comparing Scars", but I agree, I would love to see more of an exploration of this relationship and/or the "scars" referred to by either or both characters. [still annoyed that a Sam & Vala scene was cut by TPTB from an early S10 ep].
Thanks for commenting!

I was given a link to a lovely story about Sam, Vala, and Sara-the-former-Osiris that I also thought was excellent. Does that ring a bell? If not, I'll dig it out and share since it's a similar theme though done very differently. I think it was gen but I'd have to recheck.
They cut a scene between Sam and Vala? [sarcasm]I can't imagine why imagine why anyone would want to see two strong, beautiful women with interesting stories interact on screen.[/sarcasm] *sigh*

But anyway, I think the Ex-Hosts' Club story with Sam, Vala, and Sarah that you're referring to is mine: http://pellucid.livejournal.com/151898.html Unless someone else has written one as well, in which case I would most definitely want to read it!!!

That's an EXCELLENT story and the it plumbs the wonderful stories that Stargate is so good at creating but never exploring.
I'm awfully glad you read the comments on this one!

I too seem to have been neglectful in fb, but I too really enjoyed it.
Sniff, poor damaged Sarah. Poor all of them!
Glad you agreed with the rec! :-)

Yeah, they filmed it, and then cut it for "time". I suspect it's a scene right before when Sam and Vala are in the control room together, or come into the gate room together or something. It's been a while since I watched 10 to remember. Tapping and Black have both wanted to play more interaction with their characters.
And yes your fic rememberence DID ring a bell, and how nice the author herself provided the link. Heh. You're right, it was excellent.

There's so much backstory to learn from Vala and all we get are contacts she can use to buy second-hand scout ships. ::sigh::
Yeah. Great, great fic.
