Campfire Stories by Fabrisse (G)
Hi, I'm Aurora, and I'll be rec'cing "Gen" in this last month of the year, which is my favorite type to read. The recs will most likely be all SG-1 related, with strong emphasis on the team interaction and canonesque characters (I'm all about the teamy goodness of our intrepid heroes). Hope you enjoy the tales as much as I did!
Rec Category: GEN
Pairing/Characters: No pairings; team friendship; George Hammond; SG-1; Sha're; Skaara
Category: Hurt/Comfort; Drama; Angst
Warning: references canon character deaths in passing

Why this should be read:
First, this story is why I chose to rec this category (even if it *is* the busy holiday season).
To describe this fic is simple enough. It recounts several occasions of an annual event on Abydos--the festival celebrating the defeat of Ra.
What makes this special is the lyrical quality to the tale. Each year the celebration is different...most notably by the people who are present, and those who are absent. Each time it is more noticeable how the story transforms from history to legend. The descriptions and feelings of SG-1, Shau'ri/Sha're, Skaara, Kasuf, even Hammond give a personal touch to the far-reaching tale.
It is a wonderful tribute to the people of Abydos, and the heroes who helped free them from the evil god Ra. The end made me mourn the Abydonians' loss all over again.
On the second anniversary of the victory over Ra, the celebrations were more muted. Shaure and Skaara had been taken by another monster who rivaled Ra, and Daniel, whom all had loved and valued for his knowledge, had returned with O'Neill through the chappa'ai to try to return those who were stolen.
The ghost stories were lighter and funnier because, with a real threat, no one wanted to frighten the children. But late in the evening, after the youngest were asleep, Kusuf began the story of Daniel who came from another world to help defeat the god Ra. And Tmrit who had been a friend to Shaure and nearly a good-daughter to Kusuf for her love of Skaara told the story of their loss. Others joined in remembering when Shaure's kindness, Skaara's humor, or Daniel's wisdom had touched their lives.
This year, at the end of the three days of celebration, the people of Abydos unburied the chappa'ai to see if Daniel returned.

Loved loved loved this one. So... Abydos in thinking. Like looking at the history of the Stargate from another POV entirely.

If it's any comfort, one of my later fic recs will likely be one you've already rec'ced here in a different category, because a discussion made me look for the fic...and searching the recs here...specifically your rec helped me find it. And when I reread it, realized, wow, this was pretty awesome!
