Old Soldiers Die Hard by Sholio (T)
Hello, I'm the rec'cer for Rodney this month!
Rec Category: Rodney McKay
Pairing: None
Category: Gen, Drama
Warning: None
Author on LJ:
sholio
Author's Website: FF.Net account
Link: Old Soldiers Die Hard
Why This Must Be Read:
One of the few really good writers on FF.Net, Sholio is a master at both long, plotty stories, and shorter character pieces. Old Soldiers Die Hard is one of the latter. In this story, Rodney McKay is his usual arrogant, annoying self; his character is not romanticised or softened in any way, yet still manages to be sympathetic, especially as the events surrounding the story are slowly revealed. The outsider point of view of the story is what really makes it though, with her view of Rodney changing slowly throughout the piece as she sees beyond his bitter exterior to his warm marshmallow center. Ok, not exactly; but another great thing about this story is how it avoids all such tropes and cliches effortlessly. Just read it already!
Summary: The old guy in Room 30B was about the most disagreeable human being that the nurses had ever met. But he did get visitors -- including a retired Air Force Colonel.
