ADMIN: LJ's TOS, and the comm's reaction
In the wake of the abrupt change in LJ's TOS last month and the concerns of many, the admins of
stargateficrec have been discussing our options.
We have created a backup archive of the community on Dreamwidth, but for now, that's all it is. It's a safety measure to ensure that no matter what happens to LJ in the future, 13 years' worth of Stargate fandom won't be lost.
stargateficrec's community members can be divided into two separate types: those that are active in the comm (and we thank you, reccers!), and those that passively enjoy seeing fic recs pop up in their flists. Any future decisions need to serve both kinds. There are, perhaps, a dozen active members, and we aware that some of those active members have chosen to leave LJ and move exclusively to DW; but there are also over 1,800 people who have
stargateficrec on their flists. We want to determine how we can best serve our community.
To that end, please take a minute to respond to the poll below. Knowing the reactions of as many comm readers as possible will give us a clearer idea of where to go from here.

Note that personally I don't care about the TOS changes per se, I care about the way we were trapped into accepting the new TOS simply to be able to login (even if it was just to copy/download/move our journals) with no warning whatsoever.

Crossposting to a comm is actually a bit of a nightmare, I'm afraid. I speak from experience. :) It would all have to be done manually, and by the reccers themselves. I have an archive of my own recs; I crosspost simulatneously to the LJ and DW versions, then go back manually to repost it to stargateficrec itself.

FB have locked me out of my account after 10 years with no way of getting my personal data back without giving them information I won't provide. Nor is there any way I can find of communicating with them about the matter, even in English. All because of the TOS that they don't apply to a huge number of accounts.
I'd like the comm to stay on LJ, but will still read if it goes to DW. However, it's the reccers who provide the material, so I can't read what isn't recced.

For me, the advantage of having a DW presence would be the possibility of getting new members and new reccers. But, I've been happy with how it is on LJ too.
I recced a couple of times last year. I'd like to do some more in the future, but I'd want to do it in the old familar LJ layout where I have a very messy memories list.

Now, I'm all for moving to DW.
Thank you to all the contributors for all the work that's been done here. I appreciate it.
