Why This Must Be Read: So technically this could technically be called pre-slash (why, yes, it does have to do with Jack!), but the whole shindig takes place because Oma's trying to teach Daniel something. She sends him to meet up with Coyote - the Coyote - who's his fast talking, snarky, smart assed self. If you're unfamiliar with the original language of old legends (that is, the unvarnished versions of what we tell these days in the first world), you may be startled by the inherent violence of the tale being told at one point, but it's brief. The storytelling is very good, Coyote and Badger are spectacular, and her characterization of Daniel is very nice. There's also an original character, Anna, that's a lot of fun when she starts giving Coyote the what for!

Author's Summary: Why Coyote loves Badger, why Badger stays with Coyote, and why Daniel descended. (The author mentions in the linked notes that an understanding of Native American mythology can be helpful, but isn't really necessary and I would agree. If you have absolutely no knowledge of the kind of character Coyote would represent, the Wikipedia article will more than get you up to speed.)

Excerpt: Coyote scratched at his ear with his front paw, watching the human. The human turned. "Are you the one Oma said I was here to meet?"

Coyote sat up, eyes popping open. What the fuck? It had been years since a human. . .Coyote narrowed his eyes, suddenly aware that the good, rain smell emanating from the human meant he was not exactly a human after all. "Oma? Desala? You mean Old Woman?" Coyote asked, letting himself become Spirit Coyote. "Huh. You're Spirit. . ." His eyes roved over the human form. "Not bad packaging." He said approvingly. "So how many girls can you fuck with a body like that? Don't answer that. Let me guess. You prefer the leather bar downtown."

The human spirit's eyebrow arched. "You're Coyote?" He asked in a dubious tone.

"And you're not as dumb as you look. Who're you besides a hunka' hunka'?"

"Daniel Jackson."

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I read this story once a long time ago but failed to bookmark it so I haven't had the pleasure of re-reading it before today. What a tasty gem of a story - the mythological setting is absolutely perfect for a story about Daniel.

How much more appropriate for Oma to be Old Woman in a Starbucks than to be a harried diner waitress! This is exactly the sort of balance between surreal and character-based that I just love. And major points to the writer for bringing in mythology and sly references to Vancouver. Just love it. Thank you for rec'ing this!
