Five Ways Marshal Sumner Died

Why this must be read:

Ah, Marshall Sumner, the man that fandom forgot. Used mainly for other character's development and to further the plot by being big ol' bad Col. Sumner and dying, it's hard to find fics that illustrate him as a character and further develop him. Go figure that the best example of that I could find would be one that shows us five ways he died... *sigh* What I really like about Shade's piece here, though, is that we get to see Sumner as a man and not just the cookie cutter Colonel that just makes Sheppard look good. He's a man with a protective streak towards his men, a man with a sense of humor, a man who likes Westerns, and a man who knows how to die when it's in the cards. Every one of these five, from the canonical first to all the other possibilities, will make you respect the man more and wish to God the writers had kept him around longer. Rest well, Colonel Sumner, you are missed and respected.

Story Summary: see title really

The water was most of the way up their legs and the room's incline had increased. Marshal looked around for a way to save his men, but there were no windows to shoot out, no other doors they could try except the ones at the bottom of the stairs, the ones the water was coming from.

"It's no good, sir!" Markham yelled over the sound of the water.

The water was up to his chest when Marshal finally smirked and admitted defeat.

"It could be worse, boys."

"Colonel?" Bates yelled. He was already floating a bit.

"We could be Navy. Then this would be really embarrassing."

The men looked at him for a moment before Stackhouse chuckled. The others slowly followed suit. They were still laughing when their heads touched the ceiling. Less than a minute later, the room was completely full.

Thanks for recc'ing this, I'd never seen it and I liked it. You are right, in that Sumner is overlooked a lot.
