Why This Must Be Read:

This is a personal favorite of mine.  Daniel is drawn well, the progression from loneliness to need is a slow one, but totally understandable, and to watch it happen hurts and at the same time is release.  And the bartender Jessie is one of my favorite original characters, ever.  Anna is an excellent writer - she's only written a handful of Stargate stories, but there are classics among that number, including No man is Born An Angler and The Other Half, both of which can be found at her website - it'll be worth your time to visit her site.

This story made me weep. Literally. By the end, Daniel's so desolate, searching for somtething to keep him sane. An immensely powerful story and a very worthy rec.

Yeah, you know, I probably should have warned people it's not a "happily ever after" story, huh? You're right - powerful is a very good description.

You know, this is a brilliantly written fic, and Anna S. is among my favorite writers in this fandom. But I just can't stand this story. It put me in a terrible mood for days, and I'm not normally that sensitive to fiction. I tried to delete it from my memory, but it kept haunting me. *shudder*

Again, I'm not saying it's bad. On the contrary. I'm just saying that it should be classified as a sort of a mind altering substance, and avoided by anyone who might be feeling fragile that day.

...so what you're saying is it should come with a warning label:

Danger: Will haunt your memory - take only in small doses. Do not read in a fragile mood. Contains mind altering substances: do not attempt to operate heavy machinery.

Yeah, I'll agree - it's not what you'd call a feel-good fic. But there's something about it that appeals to me. Maybe I'm just a masochist?
