Why This Must Be Read: I don't usually read Daniel/Sam as the pairing just doesn't ring true for me (in fact I'm pretty sure I got half-way through the story the first time around before I realized what the pairing was), but I love this story anyway. Animal transformation stories are a favourite of mine in other fandoms, but sadly SG1 doesn't really lend itself to those easily, so to find a story in the SG1 fandom that works for that troupe was like finding gold. The author takes their time developing an interesting plot that's fun to read and has just the right ballance of angst, humour and a smidgen of romance. Daniel is believeable as a dog, yet still very much Daniel.

Author's summary: An alien spirit has 'borrowed' Daniel Jackson's body, promising to return it in two month's time. But Daniel discovers another spirit has hostile designs on Samantha Carter. In order to protect her, he has no choice but to inhabit the body of a dog. Guarding her from all threats, he hides his true identity, as well as his secret love for her.

But a dog's life is a dangerous thing, and the threats Daniel faces off-world pale in comparison to the peril he faces on Earth itself. In the end, saving Sam may prove easier than saving himself.

Out of all the Sentinel/SGA/SG1 crossover stories I have read this is my favourite. Not only does Keira Marcos takes on the Sentinel mythology but runs with it enhances it and creates a superb series delving deeper into the Sentinel/Guide Universe beautifully. John has spent his life as an unbounded Sentinel riding under the radar until he meets Rodney a guide and then John’s Sentinel side can’t hold back.

Daniel visited Jack and Teal'c while ascended, but what about poor Sam? What is she, chopped liver? Well, not to Ms. Moonshayde! In this very moving piece, Sam gets a visit from a Daniel who is somehow familiar, and yet different, while injured on a mission. With wonderful use of dialogue and action, Moonshayde gives us an incident where Daniel visits Sam to give comfort and succor during trying times. While Moonshayde isn't writing in SG1 fandom anymore, this example of her writing just goes to show that good stories continue to get around. Go read!

Now for a complete opposite to my last Dan/Sam rec... an utterly light-filled Christmas-y romance! Daniel is recovering his memories in Season 7 and visits Sam about some unfinished business. He comes while she is putting up her Christmas decorations. What follows is one of the most romantic holiday fics I've read in SG1 fandom. I love Amaranth's flow in Longest Night; it flows seamlessly from bringing coffee to decorating the Christmas tree to slow-dancing to holiday jazz. It's soft. It's sweet. It's romantic. What else is appropriate right before Christmas, I ask you?

That Daniel lost his Sam, but not before they had a loving relationship and family first. Now he's faced with another Sam who hasn't approached her Daniel with her feelings. So begins a very tender exploration of what could be waiting in store for Sam if she just chucks up enough courage to say those magic words. Alternate/quantum realities give so many chances for the exploration of these sort of themes, and Eventhorizon7 delivers in this one.

Jack wanders into something really unexpected when walking into Sam's lab. From this intriguing scenario, we get one of the most pant-inducing smut fics I've ever read for Daniel/Sam. And it doesn't hurt that there's a slight hint of Dan/Sam/Jack in the last few lines.... Even though lilyleia78 doesn't usually write het, she has pegged the "hot" factor for Dan/Sam with a side of Jack. I was definitely reaching for the window after reading this (even though it was -20 degrees F outside!! XD). Go enjoy the heat in this cold winter month!

It's fluffy Dan/Sam... What's not to love? :) This is a simple icon fic from Surreallis that is sweet, gentle, and oh so very Dan/Sam. Daniel and Sam are stuck on stake-out duty. In the quiet moments of changing watch shifts, something very softly shifts them from friends to something more. With subtle description, Surreallis will give you an excellent example of why this pairing can be sweet as well as angsty.

I know I've recced this already in the angst category, but I don't feel that I'm doing a Dan/Sam spat of reccing justice without bringing this up. This is hands down one of the saddest and most emotional fics I've read for this pairing and in Stargate fandom in general. After Daniel's "death", Sam is left with only memories, Daniel's glasses, and an empty apartment with a haunting melody playing in the background. What is especially poignant is that Daniel used to play Mahler's Adagietto for Sam; so the melody in the background just tugs at the readers heartstrings all the harder. Adagietto ties in so many aspects I adore in fics: tie-in with music, high on emotions, and lyrical word usage. Don't forget to have the song playing in the background as you read; it makes the fic all the more touching.

Why this must be read:

At first I thought this was your typical SG1 adventure story (i.e. go to planet, meet aliens, get in trouble, get out of trouble, go home) with a side of Dan/Sam. Then a jaw-dropping turn (and you should have heard my scream when it happened!) at the end of Chapter 2 turned this into an emotional adventure that just made me want to weep, laugh, and cheer in various turns. Thraesja managed to draw me in extremely fast with wonderful description, emotional heart-string tugs, and spot-on character voices. This has now become one of my absolute fav Dan/Sam adventure stories. Definitely check out this and the author's other wonderful fics!

This is an author who has a gift with the details. Through glorious description, the reader sees a glimpse, through Daniel's eyes, a Sam Carter trying to hold it together after Season 10 episode, Morpheus. Then with a Daniel who's both understanding and supportive, Sam is given the opportunity to know that she's not alone; she does have support in her team and in the man who loves her. Rowan has an incredible gift with words in this piece. It's descriptive. It's glorious. It's a fic worth reading!

Why This Must Be Read: Sorrel deftly weaves her story in and out of canon, adding layers of probability and likelihood to Sam and Daniel's relationship. It is not a smooth and straight path to a feather pillow landing, however, and this is what makes her story interesting. Their discussion of the ramifications of Sam's hallucinations during Grace is bittersweet but has the ring of truth. You, the reader, will find it difficult to put down this 25K word tale of the evolution of friendship to love. And, for those looking for further adventures, Sorrel has expanded Scenes to include some additional action with other future stories! Thanks for the toy at the bottom of the cracker jack box, Sorrel!

This has got to be one of the saddest Daniel/Sam fics I’ve ever come across. It’s a walk through Sam’s mind as she remembers Daniel after his “death” in Meridian. What Jeanine has done here is just poetry of the soul. She’s tied together Daniel’s talent in music, his place as a refuge in Sam’s life, and a truly tragic incident in the figure skating world that Sam equates with her situation so well.

As Sam’s sitting in Daniel’s empty apartment, listening on CD to the song that Daniel played for her, the reader gets such a deep sense of the love these two shared. To Sam, her sanctuary has been ripped away, leaving her with only memories, a haunting melody coming from the CD player, and Daniel’s glasses. Another example of the depth of emotion these two share. Go read and cry!!!

Daniel and Sam are quite familiar with each other here. They get the other in a way readers will find enviable, following their partner's drunken segues and sexual advances like a lazy river on a warm summer's day. While the afternoon delights are front and center, the story is so beautifully drawn that it's almost an after-thought. I thoroughly enjoyed how their minds work! Read, enjoy, and feed the author.

Why this must be read: Scroll down to read the fic amongst the other 'five things'. Awhile ago I was getting pretty bored with Sam/Jack fics, but when I read the second "regret", when she's eating in the commissary, it completely forced me back into that fandom. It's funny, sad, sexy, embarrassing... and all in five tries. The Sam/Daniel part really isn't my thing, and if the same goes for you... don't let it deter you. The theme of blue Jell-O is often overused in SG fanfics, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as proven by this author. Every story Jennghis Khan has written is amazing, but sometimes the short and simple pieces are the ones that stick with you.

There's an off-chance the third 'regret' might be considered non-consensual. I didn't think so at all but my friend was convinced otherwise- so I suppose it's up for interpretation. But the second one... wow.

Why This Must Be Read: In a way this is a PWP with a story :) The main part of the story is romance, but there is also a nice little story around it. It is very well told and all the characters are likable. Even Jack and Martouf/Lantash mostly get along, which is so rarely the case in fic. We also see a positive development in the Tok'ra and Tau'ri relations, which I personally like very much. All in all it is a nice, long, romance - with many humourous scenes.

It's a few years into a post-apocalypic Earth and what happened to get it that way is a facinating and satisifyingly gradual reveal. Wandering Blind has a snazzy action/adventure filling sandwiched between two deliciously sexy "it's complicated" relationship cookies.

This story is everything I wish I could write. It has it all: an incredible Jack voice; deep and believable characterisation; the perfect mix of angst and suspense and humour... Also? Zombies.
