Why This Must Be Read: This fic was written for the 2006 swficathon. The request was a "Jane Austen 'pride and prejudice' style fic". It's a series of letter that Elizabeth, widowed, send to her friend, Samantha. It's a beautiful fic which respects (as far as I know) the ways of the time the story is set in. If you like that kind of AU fics, it's just a great one.

Why This Must Be Read: Not an apocafic in the conventional sense, but still an absolutely gut-wrenching story. grav_ity shows us the downfall of the Atlantis expedition and how it comes in a single day with a single event. We see just what Elizabeth can be driven to when faced with an overwhelming loss, and how the rest of the expedition must react to what she is willing to do. An outstanding darker fic.

Why This Must Be Read: Otter gives us Sam and Daniel on one of their earliest missions, when Daniel is still half-dazed - and crazed - with grief and loss. Sam gets him talking a little, and laughing a little, as they bond over huge frogs and the gleeful wonder of standing on an alien planet. I love the peek into Daniel's memories of Abydos, with the opening of that world... which leads, in turn, to the opening of possibilities to friendship and understanding.

I love early Sam and Daniel fics, where the two of them are just getting to know one another. This is early, early Sam and Daniel, when Sam still thinks of Daniel as "Jackson" and Daniel still calls her "Captain Carter." By the end of this charming story, though, Sam is thinking of him as Daniel - and, to use a cliche that suits this very non-cliched story perfectly, it's the beginnings of a wonderful friendship.

Why this must be read:

She doesn't feel grounded in her own body anymore.

You can't think of Rodney and Laura without immediately thinking of Duet, so naturally my first rec is a Duet tag. This one deals with the fallout for Laura in being back in own own body, which is obviously quite different to Rodney's :) Laura's sense of awkwardness is well conveyed and Reccea focuses on specific things that you can imagine would be an issue, such as the size of her feet when walking. And Laura comes up with quite a unique and very hot way to deal with this :P The fic is straightfoward and direct in a way that both the characters are, which means the characterisations are spot on. It's not romantic per se, but there's definite tenderness and possibly even affection by the end :)
