Why This Must Be Read: The Summary says: “You don't have a Dr. McKay?” he demanded, trying to keep his voice steady and trying not to imagine any one of the terrible things that must have happened for him to not be here. Radek gave him a curious look. “No, we do. But who are you?”
I first came across it as a podfic read by librarychick_94 and it has remained one of my favourites.
This is a fun fic that actually starts off in the past in the alternate universe. When it jumps to present day we find Rodney after having touched a piece of Ancient technology coming around on the lab floor in an alternate universe only to discover that the AU McKay is a she, a very pregnant she.
“Oh no. I think—I think I need to speak to whoever is in charge.”
“Ah, that would be me,” the woman next to Radek said and Rodney felt the little tickle of dread expand into full-blown panic.
“You don't have a Dr. McKay?” he demanded, trying to keep his voice steady and trying not to imagine any one of the terrible things that must have happened for him to not be here.
Radek gave him a curious look. “No, we do. But who are you?”
“I'm Dr. Rodney McKay and I'm—well, I think I've just come from an alternate time line...” he trailed off because the moment he'd said his name, everyone in the room had gasped and started whispering furiously. Oh god. What if he was hideously deformed in this time line? Was that why no one could recognize him? Radek started jabbering into his radio and the woman next to him was peering at Rodney so curiously he almost felt the urge to cover himself.
“Look, I know this is strange, believe me, I know, but I'm reasonably sure time is something of a factor. I need to speak to your McKay.”
The woman narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. “Fine. You're looking at her. I'm Dr. McKay.”
